Homonyms are words with the same form (sound, spelling or both)
but a different meaning.
We studied words which sound the same but look different – these
are called homophones.
An example would be tale and tail.
We also looked at words which look the same but sound different -
these are homographs. Wind is an example of this – the thing that
blows and what you do with a watch!
Homophones and homographs are both types of homonym.
We drew pictures of our different homonyms.
We put our pictures into a bag of tricks. like the character in our
folk tale had. He was a con-man who was able to trick people.
Homonyms can be tricky so we put them in special “bags of
trickiness”!
Homonyms sound the same, look the same but aren’t the same. I drew a pen and a pig pen. By Oliver.
I drew a man running and a chicken run. ‘Run’ is a Homonym. It looks the same but means something different. By Ben
Yesterday afternoon (Monday) we got a surprise letter from St. Ninian’s Primary School in Stirling. Their Primary 4 class are doing a project on Scotland and they want to have a display of different landmarks and scenery around Scotland.
They sent us a postcard with the letter.
The postcard shows St. Ninian’s Kirk. Here is a picture of the kirk in Stirling which is one of the closest land mark to their school.

They asked us to send them a postcard and pictures of landmarks from where we live. They have sent these letters to lots of schools around Scotland.
We think we might show them pictures of the Ben (the highest point on the island), Horse Island (a small island off Muck), the craft shop (for nice tea and cakes!) or maybe Gallanach Beach which is a lovely place to spend your afternoon.
We wish them good luck with their project.

Primary 4 to 7 have recently been making Power point presentations. The little ones were amused and liked it lots. They liked the animations and were quite interested in the facts. I enjoyed doing it and would like to do it again. My favourite slide is my Saturn one.

If you want to read about the power points we watched last week go to: http://ourtopics.wordpress.com/2009/03/06/our-power-points/
This week at muck we have been doing mesostics. You might ask yourself what on earth is a mesostic? I’ll tell you: mesostics are like acrostics but with the word in the middle. Here are some we made up.
the bumpiness of the rocks
are the limpets clinging on?
we shelter in the shed
while the rain hammers on the roof
This mesostic is about the pier this next one is about the mainland
Mountains on the mainland
animals hide under their rugged peaks
the Mallaig lifeboat rescues people
the mainland is noisy
alien compared to Muck
you are always spending money
looks tiny in the distance
i’m glad I live here.
That’s all we made up. Hope you enjoyed reading. Bye
Today we have been learning about Mesostic poems they are quite like Acrostic poems except you dont put the word at the side of the sheet you put it in the middle.
We walked down to the pier and thought about different words that relate to the mainland or the pier.I chose to do the pier. We all thought up totally different mesostics and they were all good and exciting here is an example for mainland by Ben G:
Mallaig is very busy,
It’s a bit too energetic,
The docking harbour noise,
The annoying dinging of boats,
Liking the food is hard,
Going to the cinema is fun,
Curries are nice on the mainland,
But I would rather stay here.
This is one of my pier Mesostics
Sticking out pale alone
Rolling birds circle above
Trails of slime down the side
Ohh what a very sorry sight

Sorry we haven’t been giving you any information recently. But now we are so here’s what we have been doing since we last gave you information; we have finished the weather project. We also started the Victorians. First we had to make a family tree from now to the Victorian times and we all managed to do it. Some of us found people in our families who were born around 1750 WOW! Ancient.
After we had recovered from that shock we did and are still doing things about artwork and home decor. It is really interesting and we are learning a lot. One of the artists we have been focusing on is William Morris; he was an amazing artist. We have seen a lot of his designs, they were curtains, wallpaper, tiles etc. But we have not only been doing Victorian work we have also been doing maths and language.
This is my William Morris style artwork. I did it with crayons. I think it would be a good design for a fireplace tile.
Bye From James
